Pokemon Diamond and Pearl

Pokemon Diamond and Pearl Pokemon Training Guide

By David Mume

For those of you who are new with training Pokemon, there are a couple of things you should know:

First, Pokemon have varied levels from 1-100 (recently, level 1 Pokemon were added to this game, which is a new feature as before, the lowest level Pokemon you could have would be 2).

Second, each Pokemon needs experience points to gain levels (you gain experience points by battling with that Pokemon).

Third, Pokemon's experience amount varies depending on the level and type of Pokemon.

Fourth, Pokemon's experience point requirements also vary (for example a more powerful Pokemon might need more experience than a weaker Pokemon)

These are the advanced tactics and guidelines:

Just because a Pokemon is at level 100 doesn't mean always that it is more powerful than a level 90; even of the same Pokemon. It always depends on HOW you trained it. These are the dos anddon'ts on training Pokemon:

Don't up it's levels by day-care (the day care is found in Solaceon Town). Though it may seem like a good way to level them up, it's not. It gains only about 75 or 50 percent of what it could be gaining in stats. For example, if you were training aChimchar and gained a level by battling, you might increase 4 in attack, while if you leveled it up by day-care it would only raise 3 or even 2 in attack instead of 4. Remember to keep this in mind when breeding Pokemon: it could level it up...so be wary. A trainedInfernape with battling might have an attack of 216 at level 90; but a level 90 Infernape that has only been leveled up by day care might be an attack of 158. See the dramatic difference? That means, that a level 100Infernape (day care) versus a level 90 Infernape (fighting) could and probably would result in the level 90 Infernape winning.

Don't use rare candies. Period. If you plan on making a powerful Pokemon, rare candies are the death of you. Trust me...I know. Pretty much the same principle as the day care; it doesn't increase the stats nearly as much as training in combat does. A lot of newbie trainers desperately look for rare candies so that they can make there Pokemon "more powerful more quickly".

With those don'ts in mind, let's move on to the advanced tactics...

If you are just starting your adventure and have multiple Pokemon to train,
